1. DEGREE

1.1 What is the calendar of classes and other academic activities?

1.2 How can I apply for the Statute (Worker - student; Firefighter; Fathers and Mothers; Religious Confession)

Applications are made via the VIRTUAL SECRETARIAT, selecting the statute you want to apply for, and attaching the documents referred to in the legislation.

You must apply for the worker-student statute upon registration/enrollment or within 10 (ten) working days after classes start;

You may also apply for it up to 10 (ten) working days after the start of classes in the 2nd semester, but the benefits provided are only applicable to the 2nd semester curricular units.

For 3rd year students the deadline to apply for statutes is until the 30th of August for the first semester and until the 15th of January for the second semester.

For 2nd semester 4th year students, the deadline for applying for statutes is the 15th of January.

2. Part-time

2.1 What does the part-time attendance scheme mean?
According to the current regulations, you are considered a part-time student if you are enrolled in up to 30 ECTS in the academic year.

The part-time attendance scheme allows enrollment in to a smaller number of curricular units during the academic year, and the student would pay the proportional amount of the ECTS in which they enroll.

2.2 How can I apply for the part-time attendance scheme?
You can apply to change the Frequency Scheme via the Virtual Secretariat after enrollment.


3. Frequency of Isolated Curricular Units

3.1 Who can enrol in and attend Isolated CU's?
Both students enrolled in a higher education course or any other interested parties can enrol in or attend isolated CU’s.
Candidates can be:
a) Students enrolled in ESEL study cycles;
b) Students enrolled in other higher education institutions;
c) Other candidates:
    i) Holders of a higher education qualification;
    ii) Holders of secondary studies qualifications which, at the time of completion, constitute (or have constituted) academic qualifications for access to higher education:
    iii) Those over 23 years of age, who have passed the respective higher education entrance exams;
    iv) Holders of a relevant professional curriculum in the CU area to which they apply.

3.2 I would like to attend Isolated CUs. How do I enrol and how much do I have to pay?
You should apply and indicate the CU's you intend to attend. The fee is calculated according to the number of ECTS corresponding to the isolated CU's attended, by the value of each ECTS, set annually by resolution of the Management Board for the 1st and 2nd study cycles, in addition to the appropriate fees for the registration/enrollment and school insurance.

Note: applications must be formalised, exclusively, up to 10 working days before the start date of the academic activities


4. Special Schemes

4.1 Change of Pair Institution/Course/Re-entry/Holders of Higher Education Qualifications

4.2 What is the Change of Pair Institution/Course?
It is the act by which a student registers and/or enrolls in an pair institution/course other than the one(s) in which they were enrolled in previous academic years.

4.3 Who can apply for the Change of pair institution/course?
a) Students who have been registered and enrolled in another pair institution/course pair and have not completed it;
b) Students who have taken the national secondary education exams corresponding to the entrance exams set for that pair, for that year, within the scope of the general access scheme;
c) Students who have, in these exams, the minimum grade required by the higher education institution, in that year, within the scope of the general access scheme;
d) The change of pair institution/course scheme also applies to students who have been registered and enrolled in a foreign higher education institutions in a course defined as higher education by the country in question’s legislation, and have not completed it;

NOTE:

  • Students are not allowed to change their pair institution/professional higher technical course, or foreign course at the corresponding level, to undergraduate study cycles or integrated master's study cycles;
  • Students are not allowed to change pair institution/course in the academic year in which they have been placed in a higher education pair institution/course under the any access and admission scheme and they have registered and enrolled.

4.4 What is Re-entry?
It is the act by which a student, after pausing their studies in a pair institution/higher education course, registers in the same institution and enrolls in the same course or course that they were previously registered in.

4.5 Who can apply for Re-entry?
Students who have not been enrolled in the Lisbon School of Nursing in the academic year prior to the one in which they intend to re-enter can apply for re-entry in an pair institution/course.

4.6 Is the contest subject to vacancies?
Yes. The vacancies for these schemes are fixed annually, published in a notice and in the Diário da República (Official Gazette of Portugal).

 

5. Special Contests

5.1 Who can apply through the Special Access Contest for Holders of Higher Education Course Qualifications?
Holders of other higher education course qualifications, pursuant to paragraph d) of article 3, in conjunction with article 12, of Decree-Law No. 113/2014, of the 16th of July, amended by Decree-Law No. 63/2016, of the 13th of September.

6. Contest for Over 23s

6.1 What are the “Exams for Over 23s”?
These are special Higher Education access exams, which replace the former “ad-hoc” exam.

6.2 Who can register for the Exams?
Candidates who turn 23 years of age by the 31st of December of the year prior to taking the tests and who are not holders of higher education access clearance can apply for the specially suitable exams designed to assess their ability to attend higher education at ESEL.

6.3 Can those who have completed the 12th year of education enrol?
Yes, they can. However, you cannot have academic access clearance for the Degree in Nursing.

Access clearance is understood as holding a secondary education course or equivalent and passing the national exams that constitute entrance exams for the intended course.
This approval is valid for the year in which it was obtained and for the two immediately following.

6.4 I sat the Exams last year, but I didn't start. Do I have to sit the Exams again this year?
The grade obtained in the Exams is valid for the candidate to register and enroll in ESEL for 4 consecutive years, including the year of approval.

6.5 I attended Higher Education, but did not finish the course, can I take the Exams?
Yes, you can. But you can also apply through the Special Change Scheme for an pair institution/course.

6.6 Are Exams from other institutions valid for ESEL?
Candidates who meet the conditions set out in the contest regulations, who have passed the entrance exams for a Nursing degree in other Higher Education Nursing Schools, may be able to apply, register and enroll in the Nursing Degree Course at the Lisbon School of Nursing, for unfilled vacancies.


7. International Students

7.1 Who are international students?
International students are those who do not have Portuguese nationality, with the exceptions provided for in the following paragraph and who meet the conditions defined in article 3 of Decree-Law nº 36/2014;

It excludes the following students:
a) Nationals of a European Union Member State;
b) If they are not nationals of a European Union Member State, students who have legally resided in Portugal for more than two years, without interruption, on the 31st of August of the year in which they intend to join ESEL, as well as any children who reside with them (the length of time with the study residence permit is not relevant for this purpose);
c) Those who require entry via the special access and entry schemes regulated by Decree-Law No. 393-A/99, of the 2nd of October, amended by Decree-Law No. 272/2009, of 1st of October.

7.2 Will students who completed their secondary education in Brazil be able to use the National Secondary Education Exams (NSEE) as ESEL admission exams?
Yes, they can.


8. SPECIALISATION AND MASTERS POST-GRADUATE DEGREE

8.1 Who can apply for the Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate Degree at ESEL?
Candidates who cumulatively meet the following conditions may apply:
a) Hold a degree in Nursing or legal equivalent;
b) Hold the professional title of Nurse;
c) Have at least two years of professional experience as a Nurse, on the date of the last day of the application.


8.2 Who can apply to ESEL's Masters in Nursing courses?
Candidates who cumulatively meet the following conditions may apply:
a) Hold a degree in Nursing with at least 240 ECTS, or legal equivalent, obtained in a Portuguese higher education institution, or
Hold a degree in Nursing with at least 240 ECTS, awarded as a result of a 1st study cycle organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to that process.
b) Hold the professional title of Nurse.

8.3 Is there a minimum graduation grade to be able to apply for the Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate Degree and Master's Degree in Nursing?
No. The grade obtained in the applicant’s course is not, from the outset, an impediment to them applying for a 2nd study cycle course. However, it will constitute a relevant criterion in ranking the candidates.

8.4 Is there a maximum number of admissions to the Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate Degree and Master's Degree in Nursing courses?
Yes, a fixed number of vacancies are established. The number of vacancies is distributed between the Specialisation Post-Graduate Degree Course and the Master's Degree course.

8.5 Can you apply for more than one area of Specialisation/Master's?
Yes. You can apply for various areas of Specialisation. However, you must submit a complete application for each course you apply for.

8.6 How long are the Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate Degree and Master's Degree in Nursing courses?
The Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate course and Master's Degree in Nursing course have a normal duration of 3 curricular semesters and comprise of 90 ECTS. An exception to this is for the Maternal Health and Obstetrics Specialisation area, which comprises 120 ECTS and lasts for 4 curricular semesters.

8.7 What are the working hours of the Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate Degree course and Master's Degree in Nursing course?
As a rule, courses run with a minimum workload of 15 hours and a maximum of 25 hours per week.
Clinical Teaching periods will run with a minimum workload of 25 hours per week.

8.8 Where do the Nursing Specialisation Post-Graduate and Master's Degree in Nursing courses take place?
Classes take place mostly at the Artur Ravara campus - located on Avenida D. João II, lot 4.69.01, Parque das Nações, 1990-096 Lisbon.
